This team secured funding for the project and have oversight of all activities. Led by Professor Prendergast, this interdisciplinary group of scientists and clinicians are joined in a commitment to improving global child health. Their research focuses on the interactions between infection, immunity and malnutrition, particularly in the context of HIV infection.<\/span><\/p>\n

The KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme is a world-renowned health research unit of excellence. The programme was formed in 1989 when the Kenya Medical Research Institute formed a partnership with the Wellcome Trust and the University of Oxford. The Programme has grown from a small group of 12 to a state of the art facility hosting over 100 research scientists and 700 support staff working across Kenya, Uganda and the region. We have over the years excelled in use of novel ideas working with local community\u2019s to achieve better health for Africa while also developing African scientific leaders.<\/p>\n

As the lead research site, Zvitambo have taken on extra responsibilities in organising and running this trial. Established in 1996, Zvitambo is a non-profit organization working to improve infant and maternal health in Zimbabwe, and to disseminate their findings to improve health globally. They conduct research and provide technical support and education to reduce the burden of malnutrition and infectious diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n

TROPGAN was founded in 1999 to facilitate research into tropical gastroenterology and nutrition and to find ways to enhance clinical care for adults and children with gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders. The organisation is comprised of people with diverse experience in research. TROPGAN has five senior doctors, six PHD students, and 13 research staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a State Corporation established in Kenya in 1979 through the Science and Technology (Repealed) Act, Cap 250 of the Laws of Kenya operated under the Science Technology and Innovation Act, 2013 as the national body responsible for carrying out research in human health in Kenya. Currently, KEMRI operates under Legal Notice No. 35 of March 2021.<\/p>\n

KEMRI has grown from its humble beginning over 40 years ago to become a regional leader in human health research. The Institute currently ranks as one of the leading Centres of excellence in health research both in Africa as well as globally.<\/p>\n
