It is a randomised clinical trial, meaning that participants may be assigned to one of 5 treatment arms.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n A clinical trial is a type of research that studies new treatments and their effect on health outcomes. We are investigating new treatment plans to help them recover better.<\/span><\/p>\n If results are promising, then we will have evidence to support changes to current treatment guidelines. The researchers have experience of working with policy makers in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Kenya.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.22.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_icon font_icon=”||fa||900″ icon_color=”gcid-b58e2385-d7f3-4b8c-8c82-a83e7d966eb3″ icon_width=”32px” align=”left” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||20px||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{%22gcid-b58e2385-d7f3-4b8c-8c82-a83e7d966eb3%22:%91%22icon_color%22%93}” sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_icon][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”607a4a1b-0f21-4363-a727-309b459f7d58″ custom_margin=”||0px||false|false” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”91b7ab3c-8e1b-4660-9e36-45066410e0aa” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n All children involved in the study will receive the usual treatment available for SAM and some will receive extra treatments to see whether there is a difference in how they recover once they leave hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n The study will enrol a maximum of 1266 children aged 6 months to 5 years across three countries: Zambia, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Caregivers of children admitted to hospital with SAM will be invited to allow their child to take part. Participation is entirely optional, and caregivers will be given plenty of information and time to ask questions and consult family members or friends. <\/span><\/p>\n We start the interventions while the child is in hospital and continue them for 12 weeks after discharge. Study visits take place in the study clinic after 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. At these visits we will measure weight, height, and upper arm size, to see how the treatment is working, and collect medical information about the child. We will collect blood and stool samples.
